A2 ISAND HALL SCREENPRINT
Print created for my solo show. I lino printed sections of Island Hall and then built the whole building to be created as a screenprint in a small number.
Island Hall in Godmanchester is a graceful Georgian mansion built in the late 1740s (completed around 1749) as a riverside home for John Jackson, Receiver-General for Huntingdonshire.
In 1804 it passed to a merchant, Jacob Julian Baumgartner (later the house stayed in his family, who became known as the Percy family), and remained a private residence for over a century. Island Hall+2Historic Houses+2 During the Second World War it was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force — first to the WAAF, then to the RAF’s Pathfinder Squadron — and after the war was converted into multiple council flats under the Emergency Housing Act.
A fire in the late 1970s damaged part of the building, but in 1983 the house was bought back by a descendant, Christopher Vane Percy, who over the 1980s–2000s carried out extensive restoration, rebuilt the historic “Chinese-style” bridge linking the gardens to the island in the river, and restored the house to its former Georgian-era splendour.
